Closing the gap

CLOSING THE GAP

It is hardly news that times are tough for families seeking midwifery support for physiologic birth in New York

With birthing centers closing and many midwives being denied access to malpractice insurance, fewer options are available for physiological birth. There is hope that midwife led birthing centers may be opened in the future, but rules and regulations still need to be signed first. In this dull landscape, the Brooklyn Birthing Center shines its little light: BBC will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on November 19, 2019! Twenty years of trust in women’s ability to give birth.

Trinisha Williams is heading the group of midwives practicing at BBC. The team is composed of experienced midwives Susan Brockmann, Yuen Kwan Chan, Sakina O’Uhuru and Nicole Aljoe, as well as of fellow midwives Kathryn Peck, Tameil Youmans, Catalina Bertani and Laure Sinnhuber-Giles. The midwives are supported by a dedicated staff including IBCLCs.BBC is proud to offer women access to a tub for labor and birth; nitrous oxide; a rocking chair; a birth stool; non separation of mother and baby. Childbirth preparation classes are a prerequisite. Family involvement is encouraged. Doula support is highly recommended – we love doulas! There is a transfer protocol with two area hospitals when needed. Prenatal breastfeeding classes are a prerequisite and postpartum support by an IBCLC is available. A home visiting nurse checks on the family in the first few days after birth in person. The midwives keep in close contact with the family and see the woman again for her 4 weeks postpartum visit.
BBC is located in Madison and has a satellite office in Bed-Stuy. It is designated Baby-Friendly and is accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers.
Anyone is welcome for an orientation, no commitment required. https://www.brooklynbirthingcenter.com
